Cornea Diseases Explained Simply

 Corneal dystrophies

  • In this condition the cornea loses its transparency due to the build-up of deposits, causing cloudy vision.
  • This group of disorders usually runs in families.

 Keratoconus

  • Keratoconus is a condition where cornea progressively gets thinner and more elongated to become cone- shaped.
  • Eye rubbing and allergies are a risk factor.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment for this condition is essential as it can cause severe and permanent vision loss.

 Pterygium

  • This is a whitish-wing-shaped growth on the cornea.
  • It can be related to age or exposure to sun, wind or dust.

 Corneal Infections

  • Infection by bacteria, viruses, fungi or other organisms can cause pain, swelling and opacification of the cornea.
  • Improper use of contact lenses is one of the most common causes for corneal infections.

 Corneal decompensation

  • If the cornea has not been properly protected during Cataract surgery,  swelling and opacification of the cornea, or Corneal decompensation can occur many years later.
  • This usually requires corneal transplantation.

 Dry Eye

  • When the eyes are unable to generate enough tears to stay wet, dry eye occurs.
  • In this condition, one can experience burning sensation, foreign body or pricking sensation, discomfort or pain, blurry vision worsening towards the end of the day and eye strain.

Treatment options for cornea diseases:

Non-Surgical Treatment

Eye drops

Certain eye drops can be prescribed to alleviate symptoms such as dryness, discomfort and itching.

Contact lenses

Contact lenses can improve vision and help to protect the cornea in certain conditions.

Antibiotics/Anti-viral medication
Antibiotics/Anti-viral medication may be prescribed to treat corneal infections caused by bacteria and other organisms

Steroids

Steroids may be prescribed to reduce inflammation in the cornea.

Surgical Treatment

Corneal Cross-Linking

This procedure involves the use of UV light and eye drops to strengthen the cornea and prevent further deterioration in certain disease conditions.

Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK)

PTK uses a laser to remove damaged tissue from the cornea and promote healing.

Intra-Corneal Ring Segments

This is a treatment for Keratocunus and other ectatic conditions where small arc-shaped implants are inserted to stabalize the cornea.

Corneal Transplant

In severe cases where the cornea is damaged beyond repair, a corneal transplant may be necessary.

Special Care Unit

Open visitation with only two visitors in a room at any given time. No one under 12 years of age may visit without permission .

Frequently Asked Questions

Can rubbing of eyes cause serious corneal disorders?

What are the surgical treatment options for corneal diseases?

Surgical treatment options for corneal diseases may include Corneal cross-linking, Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK), Corneal Stem cell transplantation, Corneal inlays, Refractive surgeries and Cornea transplant in severe cases.

What is the recovery time for corneal transplantation?

Recovery time for corneal transplantation can vary depending on the disorder and the extent or type of the procedure. It may take several weeks to several months to fully recover.

Can I drive after corneal transplantation?

It is recommended to wait until your doctor gives clearance before driving or operating heavy machinery following corneal transplantation.

Can corneal transplantation cure blindness?
